What the gearing means on your bike

A cassette is the stack of rear sprockets that your chain moves across when you shift. With the same front chainring, moving the chain onto a larger rear sprocket makes pedaling easier; moving it onto a smaller sprocket gives you a taller gear. The actual gearing also depends on your front chainrings, so an 11–34 cassette alone does not tell you how easy your lowest gear will be.

The first five sprockets run from 11 through 15 teeth in one-tooth steps. Those close steps let you make smaller cadence adjustments in the faster gears. The larger sprockets spread the remaining ratios out toward 34 teeth, giving you more climbing range without changing the number of rear speeds.

Use a compatible Shimano 12-speed drivetrain and HG 12-speed chain. Confirm that your rear derailleur supports a 34-tooth largest sprocket and has enough total capacity for your chainring combination. If changing cassette range, chain length and derailleur adjustment may also need attention.
