Wolf Tooth Tanpan 10-Speed Road-to-MTB Conversion Adapter
The Wolf Tooth Tanpan is a small adapter that lets Shimano 10-speed road shifters properly control Shimano 10-speed mountain rear derailleurs. It solves the cable-pull mismatch that normally prevents these parts from working together.
This is typically used when converting a road, gravel, cyclocross, or commuter bike to a wider-range cassette and a mountain derailleur—often as part of a 1x drivetrain setup—while keeping drop-bar shifters.
Key Features
• Converts Shimano 10-speed road shifter cable pull to match Shimano 10-speed Dynasys mountain derailleurs
• Enables use of wide-range MTB cassettes with drop-bar controls
• Compact, external adapter—no drivetrain internals modified
• Designed to mount directly at the rear derailleur cable stop
• Allows simpler 1x setups with fewer front shifting components
Compatibility & Use Notes
• Designed for Shimano 10-speed Dynasys mountain rear derailleurs
• Works with most Shimano 10-speed road, CX, and gravel shifters
• Not compatible with Shimano Tiagra 4700
• Mounts to adjuster-free cable stops on Shimano rear derailleurs
• Some chainring and cassette combinations benefit from a Wolf Tooth GoatLink
• If the rear derailleur cable routes internally through the chainstay and exits near or past the rear axle, an inline ferrule is required
• Not intended for 11-speed or 12-speed systems
Service / Ownership Context
From hands-on installs, this adapter does exactly what it claims—but setup matters. Cable tension, derailleur capacity, hanger alignment, and cassette choice all become more critical. On some builds, shifting into the largest cog can feel slower or less decisive, especially with very large cassettes. It’s a functional solution, not a magic fix, and expectations should be set accordingly during the build.
Fit & Use Signals
• Good fit if you want drop bars with a wide-range Shimano MTB cassette
• Good fit for gravel or adventure bikes moving to a 1x drivetrain
• Good fit if you already own compatible Shimano 10-speed components
• Not a fit if you’re running Tiagra 4700, 11-speed, or 12-speed systems
• Not ideal if you expect MTB-level shifting speed under heavy load
