Plain-English Lead

The Garmin Varia RTL515 is a rear-facing radar with integrated taillight that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. It pairs with compatible Garmin Edge devices or a compatible smartphone to provide visual and vibration alerts.

This is designed for road and pavement riders who want real-time vehicle awareness, not just a flashing light. It is not a camera — it is radar plus taillight.

Service / Ownership Context

This is a rechargeable electronic device. Charging is required between rides depending on light mode used. Firmware updates are managed through Garmin devices or compatible apps. Mounting position affects radar accuracy — install centered and upright for best performance.

Fit & Use Signals

  • Good Fit: You ride road or pavement with vehicle traffic.
  • Good Fit: You already use a Garmin Edge or compatible smartphone for ride data.
  • Good Fit: You want early warning of cars approaching from behind.
  • Not A Fit: You want a rear camera with recording.
  • Not A Fit: You ride exclusively trail or MTB without vehicle exposure.
  • Not A Fit: You do not want to pair electronics to a phone or bike computer.
Common mistake: customers think this records video. It does not. That’s the RCT716. Works best when mounted straight and not angled downward. Crooked mounting reduces detection reliability. Battery life varies a lot depending on mode. Day flash gets best runtime. Radar detects vehicles, not cyclists. In group rides, it may trigger on fast riders approaching. Most road riders who try it won’t go back. Biggest complaint is price, second is charging discipline. If someone rides high-speed roads regularly, this is one of the best awareness upgrades available. If rider doesn’t already run a head unit or smartphone on bars, pairing setup can frustrate them. Firmware updates occasionally required. This is for pavement riders, not trail-only MTB.
