Why Focus On Products From The Americas?
As consumers, we often take for granted where the products we use and consume come from. For decades, the majority of our expensive outdoor equipment is manufactured in Asia due to the lower cost of labor and materials. However, with the rise of domestic manufacturing in the Americas (North, Central, South) it is important to consider the benefits of using American-made products.
According to the National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturing contributes over $2.33 trillion to the US economy and employs over 12 million people. In addition, for every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, an additional $2.74 is added to the economy. This means that utilizing American manufacturing not only supports local communities but also stimulates economic growth. That's not just in the United States, that is all of our neighbors south of us.
I don't think we need to throw around the statistical numbers, but most products in the outdoor and fitness industry that USA consumers purchase are made in Asia. Even that expensive carbon fiber dream bike started in an Asian manufacturing facility. Grava looks to work with small and medium producers because this has the biggest impact in communities and helping small communities is what matters.
Now, let's get one thing straight before the end here. The manufacturing base in Asia has been under development for over 40 years. We cannot deny the advanced technology and quality that has gone in to our cycling products over these last 4 decades. Grava is not saying we should boycott or stop using asian manufacturing, we are saying that it is important to diversify our supply chain and near shore manufacturing when possible. It would be impossible to start a bicycle company or any sort of comprehensive outdoor company without including asian partners and their manufactured products.
In conclusion, while it may be tempting to 100% rely on established manufacturing options overseas (god knows it would have been easier for us), it is important to consider including the benefits of American-made products. By supporting domestic and LATAM manufacturing, we can contribute to the growth of the American economy, ensure higher quality and safer products, and reduce our environmental impact. So the next time you're in the market for outdoor equipment, consider purchasing products that are made in America or at least integrated with some American made parts. If you happen to buy something made by Grava or a Grava partner, we appreciate that also.
